LR(1) Items & Operational Lookahead Sets
Lecture 24 of CS606 Compiler Construction introduces LR Parsing theory through the formal construct of LR Items. An LR parser scans Left-to-right, constructing a Rightmost derivation in reverse. An LR(0) item is a production rule with a dot placed at some position on the right-hand side, such as A -> alpha . beta, indicating how much of the production body has already been seen on the parser stack (alpha) and what is expected next (beta). An LR(1) item extends this definition to a pair [A -> alpha . beta, a], where a is a terminal lookahead token (or the end-marker $). The lookahead terminal specifies that a reduction by A -> alpha beta is only valid if the next incoming input token is exactly a. Students explore the operational significance of item states: an item with the dot at the beginning represents an expectation, while an item with the dot at the end [A -> gamma ., a] represents a completed handle ready for reduction. Students study intermediate code generation for multidimensional array references, evaluating base addresses and row-major displacement calculations. Key compiler optimization passes spanning loop invariant code motion, constant folding, and dead code elimination are systematically demystified. By engaging with solved past papers by Moaaz and Waqar Siddhu, learners gain actionable insights into recurrent university exam questions. Interactive quiz assessments on VU SIGMA facilitate rapid knowledge verification and retention of critical compiler engineering terminology. Comprehensive coverage of IEEE and ACM curricula standards ensures learners communicate with technical precision across global systems engineering teams. Detailed analysis of machine code selection highlights the imperative of generating instruction sequences that maximize hardware pipeline throughput. Intermediate representation taxonomy categorizes structural formats into graphical ASTs, linear tuples, and hybrid tree-address models. The strategic role of peephole optimization is evaluated as a final localized pass to eliminate redundant loads, stores, and jumps. In this lecture, students examine formal language translation principles and architectural compiler pipelines to understand automated code generation.
