Telephone Line Modems, Bell Standards, and ITU-T V-Series

Lecture 23 of CS601 examines analog telephone line modems. Students explore early Bell Telephone commercial modems, analyzing Bell 103 FSK and Bell 212A PSK signaling. The curriculum evaluates international ITU-T V-series standards spanning V.32bis, V.34 trellis coding, and asymmetric 56 Kbps V.90/V.92 protocols. Key concepts such as attenuation decibels, propagation delay, and signal-to-noise ratios are analyzed to evaluate communication channel quality. The lecture details mathematical modeling of harmonic frequencies, Fourier analysis, and composite analog waveforms in transmission channels. Digital line coding schemes including unipolar, polar, and bipolar formats are contrasted with respect to baseline wander, DC components, and clock recovery. Modulation techniques such as amplitude shift keying, frequency shift keying, and quadrature phase shift keying provide robust signaling over bandpass media. Constellation diagrams and phase shift representations are analyzed to calculate baud rates and multi-level signaling spectral efficiencies. Scholars evaluate guided media characteristics, comparing copper twisted pair and coaxial cables with immune, high-bandwidth optical fibers. Unguided wireless propagation modes spanning ground waves, sky wave ionospheric reflection, and line-of-sight microwave links are rigorously explored. Multiplexing technologies including frequency division, time division, and statistical multiplexing are investigated to maximize trunk line utilization. The curriculum traces telephone network evolution from analog local loops and FDM hierarchies to modern digital T-carrier systems and DSL access. Error detection algorithms such as vertical redundancy checks, cyclic redundancy checks, and checksums are formulated with mathematical precision. Forward error correction using Hamming codes demonstrates how parity bits locate and correct single-bit errors without requiring retransmissions. Data link flow control protocols including Stop-and-Wait and sliding window mechanisms are modeled to prevent receiver buffer overflow. Error control protocols like Go-Back-N and Selective Repeat ARQ are analyzed regarding sequence numbering, timeout intervals, and channel throughput. Bit-oriented protocols like HDLC demonstrate how bit stuffing and synchronous framing achieve transparent, full-duplex communication over serial links. Local Area Network architectures based on IEEE 802 specifications define clear distinctions between Logical Link Control and Medium Access Control sublayers.
