Smart Union by Size, Height and Path Compression
Lecture 36 of CS301 Data Structures masters advanced optimizations that transform Disjoint Set operations into one of the fastest algorithms in computer science: Union-by-Size, Union-by-Height, and Path Compression. To prevent unbalanced tree degradation during unions, Union-by-Size always attaches the root of the smaller tree to the root of the larger tree, storing the negated size of each tree in its root array cell. Union-by-Height similarly attaches the shallower tree to the deeper tree, increasing height only when two trees of identical height are merged. Both heuristics guarantee that tree height never exceeds floor(log2 N). To accelerate find operations, the lecture introduces Path Compression: during a find(x) traversal, every node along the path from x to the root is updated to point directly to the root. Combining Union-by-Size with Path Compression achieves an astonishing amortized time complexity of O(M alpha(N)), where alpha is the extremely slowly growing inverse Ackermann function (effectively less than 5 for all practical inputs). In preparing for Virtual University assessments in CS301 Data Structures, students should thoroughly review past paper subjective questions and verify key algorithm implementations relating to Smart Union by Size, Height and Path Compression. Understanding foundational data structures, pointer mechanics, algorithmic complexity, and dynamic memory allocation ensures thorough conceptual mastery for both final term examinations and technical programming interviews. Regular practice with official VU handouts pdf, solved mcqs by Moaaz and Waqar Siddhu, and targeted practice quizzes strengthens analytical capabilities, improving problem-solving speed and overall academic grades in computer science. Consistent revision guarantees optimal retention.
