Sampling Distribution of the Mean and Central Limit Theorem
Lesson 31 of STA301 marks the transition into Inferential Statistics, examining the Sampling Distribution of the Sample Mean X-bar and the Central Limit Theorem (CLT). The lecture clarifies the distinction between three distributions: the Population Distribution (characteristics of all N elements), the Sample Distribution (observations in a single drawn sample of size n), and the Sampling Distribution (the theoretical probability distribution of a sample statistic calculated across all possible random samples of size n drawn from the population). When all possible samples of size n are drawn from a population with mean mu and variance sigma^2, the sample mean X-bar varies from sample to sample. The expected value of the sampling distribution of X-bar is equal to the population mean: E(X-bar) = mu_xbar = mu. This property establishes that the sample mean is an unbiased estimator of the population mean. The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of X-bar is termed the Standard Error of the Mean: sigma_xbar = sigma / sqrt(n) for sampling with replacement or from an infinite population. For sampling without replacement from a finite population of size N, the Finite Population Correction (FPC) factor is applied: sigma_xbar = (sigma / sqrt(n)) * sqrt[(N - n) / (N - 1)]. As sample size n increases, the standard error decreases, indicating that larger samples yield more precise estimates. The lecture presents the Central Limit Theorem (CLT): if random samples of size n are drawn from any population with finite mean mu and variance sigma^2, regardless of the population distribution shape (whether skewed, uniform, or bimodal), the sampling distribution of the sample mean X-bar approaches a normal distribution with mean mu and variance sigma^2 / n as sample size n approaches infinity. In practical statistical work, when n >= 30, the normal approximation is sufficiently accurate. In Virtual University final term examinations, calculating standard errors, applying FPC factors, and explaining CLT conditions are frequently tested questions. Studying sta301 handouts and solved papers ensures thorough preparation.
